What makes the HP-10 unique is its Crossfeed technology - a selectable feature with 4 settings that enhances the audio experience in headphones by simulating a more natural soundstage, similar to that experienced with loudspeakers. Crossfeed achieves this by subtly mixing part of the signal from the left and right channels to reduce the 'unnatural' separation often experienced with headphones. This results in a more balanced and realistic soundstage, which can also reduce listening fatigue during longer sessions. For audiophiles, this is an invaluable feature, especially for recordings originally mixed for speaker listening.
The Harman curve, is also a feature you can use. This is a target frequency curve that represents the sound signature preferred by the majority of listeners in headphones. It was developed by Harman International through extensive research led by Dr Sean Olive. The aim was to identify an optimal frequency response that mimics the experience of listening to high-quality loudspeakers in an ideal room. To determine this curve, blind tests were conducted with hundreds of participants from different demographic groups. Participants were asked to listen to different headphones and rate their preferences. The results showed a general preference for a frequency response with slightly elevated bass and treble compared to a completely neutral setting.
The Harman curve serves as a guideline for headphone manufacturers striving to create products with a sound signature that appeals to most listeners. However, it is important to note that sound experience is subjective, and individual preferences may vary. Despite this, the Harman curve has become a reference point in the audio industry for achieving a balanced and widely appreciated sound quality.
"Superflat" is also a tuning option you can choose to use. It is designed to adjust the sound reproduction, specifically by linearising (making more even and neutral) the frequency response in the higher registers. This means that it reduces excessive emphasis on treble frequencies, which can result in a more balanced and natural sound character.
Adjustable damping factor high/low is available to adapt to the impedance of the headphones. Very important for the headphones to come into their own.
Stereo Mono To give you maximum flexibility, you can play audio in both stereo and mono. In stereo mode, you also have the option to switch left and right channels (L/R). When listening in mono, you can choose to hear a combined mix of both channels (L+R) or just the sound from one of the channels (L or R).
Outputs:
- On the front it has 2 unbalanced headphone outputs (3.5mm and 6.3mm) and 2 balanced (4.4mm the new so-called Pentaconn connector, and 4-pin XLR).
- On the back, it has an unbalanced RCA output and a balanced XLR output when using the HP-10 as a preamp. Here, too, you can make use of the HP-10's adjustment possibilities.
